My Favorite Things: Best Beauty Products

Every girl needs an arsenal of basic beauty products. Moisturizers, scrubs, creams, shampoos, conditioners, and sprays are your secrets to looking your best without putting too much makeup on and keeping your skin and hair looking fantastic. These are some of my favorite products and maybe the will become yours.

Neutrogena Naturals Cleanser: (Target – $7) For a Neutrogena cleanser, it’s a soft and gentle one that cleans skin effectively. My skin feels fresh when I use this both day and night. My skin has a tendency to get oily, so this stuff clears that oil and keeps it looking fresh throughout the day. With a fresh, clean scent to it, it’s the perfect morning and evening cleanser.

Alba Botanica Natural Even Advanced Moisturizer with Sea Moss (Target – $15) Despite finding this at Target, it’s a little expensive because it is an organic moisturizer. This is a fantastic moisturizer. Again, I have problems with oily skin, but this moisturizer blends right in with my skin and is never oily. Not only that, but I love the SPF15 in the moisturizer. It leaves my skin feeling soft to touch and keeping all oil away.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads (Target – $8) This is probably my favorite product out of all of them. Instead of using a regular exfoliater, I use these cleansing pads. Each pad has exfoilater already on the cleansing pad. One side is rough for exfoilating, one side smooth to finish off, and then simply rinse the pad to rinse your face. This is much easier than using a regular exfoilater and it does the job better with the exfoilating cleansing pad!

Burt Bee’s Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (Skagit Valley Co-Op – $5.50): For years, I have been ignoring my cuticles and my nails, thinking that as long as I trimmed them whenever they got too long and dirty then that would be enough. Over the last few months, I am learning that is not the case. With the natural smell of lemon, this cuticle cream smoothly goes n and keeps your cuticles moisturized and soft all day long.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter (Target – $8): Since the beginning of June, I have been steadily losing weight. Ten pounds have been lost from constantly working, eating less, and eating right. Despite the weight loss, I have developed stretch marks from the lack of elastically in my skin at my hips. I have been using Palmer’s to get rid of the stretch marks, and while it is taking time, they are slowly beginning to disappear. This is a common problem for girls everywhere, so this is a product I highly recommend adding to your arsenal.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner (Aveda Stores – $21 a bottle): In my teenage years, I used the drug store shampoo and conditioner, Herbal Essences. I got tired of using the drug store stuff and I knew my hair could be healthier. I made a switch to Aveda. While the price tag may have you think twice, Aveda is all natural keeping hair looking healthy and less damaged than using the drug store shampoo with all of those chemicals (Garnier Fructis is fantastic for a substitute bleach for toilets).  Since using Aveda products, my hair has never looked or felt better! The smooth infusion keeps the frizz away and also keeps my hair feeling silky smooth without fail. Despite the price tag, it is worth every cent!

While this may be a short list of beauty products, it’s enough to get you started. Recently, I have decided that my collection of products needed to be expanded and I could no longer get away with the products or lack thereof like I could when I was a teenager. While these products work for me, they may not work for you. Use these recommendations as a base, but use your best instincts when it comes to your own skin.

Nailing the Interview: The Basics

Interviews can cause the most anxiety and the most stress out of almost all situations we are given to deal with. We are being judged based on our experience level, our knowledge, our answers, and if we can handle the job they are looking to fill. While most people stress about interviews, I thrive on them. I am able to talk about what I know (one of my favorite things to talk about) and why I am the best person for the job (another favorite thing to talk about). While I’m not completely confident in many aspects of myself, I can be confident in the experience and the knowledge that I have.

After being on an interview committee in Pullman for my HR internship, I know what interviewers are looking for in a candidate. Not only are they looking for the qualifications for the job, but they’re looking for a level of professionalism, fresh ideas, and creativity. With these small tips, you should be thriving in interviews in no time.

Dress to impress. First impressions are important — especially when it comes to a job. No matter what the job, come looking professional. Personally, I like to dress trendy and professional. Trendy shows that I can relate to the world and the changing culture around me, but professional shows that I can put myself together when needed. A simple dress and a blazer with one or two accessories should seal the deal.

Bring an updated copy of your resume. Most employers may already have a copy via email or attached to your application, but it is important to have one anyway. It shows that you are prepared and are serious about your interview.

Master a good, solid handshake. Keep your handshake from either limp or firm, but instead in between. My handshake is in the middle with a good grip. The grip shows that I am a go getter and am willing to do what it takes to get what I want. Practice with a friend, family member, or roommate before heading off to that interview if this is an aspect you need to work on.

Stick to the questions and avoid side conversations or stories (unless they are related to the questions). “Sell” yourself in a way. Prove to them why you deserve this position, why you are the right person, and what perspective you’re going to bring to this position. Don’t forget to be humble — especially when an interviewer could possibly ask what some weaknesses of yours are. Make sure that while they are your weaknesses, you put a good spin onto them.

Use previous work experience when it comes to questions. Explain to interviewers why your background can be an asset to this position, especially if you know what they are looking for in a background. If you don’t have much experience in the position you are applying for — be sure to explain why your past experience will benefit with this new position.

At the end of the interview, interviewers will more than likely as if you have any questions. Come up with at least one or two decent questions that don’t involve “when will I hear back”. A good questions is to ask what they are envisioning for the position. That way you seem more interested in the position and what it takes to be in that job. Never forget to thank them for taking the time to interview you. When it comes to interviewing, there is no such thing as thanking too much. After all, they do want you — you might as well be polite about it.

Breathe. The interview is over and it is all out of your hands now! Try not to over think what you said or what went wrong, Go celebrate by having drinks with friends, shopping for a new pair of shoes, or even pampering yourself alone with a good pedicure, popcorn, and that favorite chick flick! If you don’t hear within the time frame they gave or a week — a follow up email or phone call can never hurt.

Must Have Read: A Year In Heels: The Girl’s Guide to Everything from Jane Austen to the A-list

It is my personal belief, there are certain books that every girl should own. A Year in Heels: The Girl’s Guide to Everything from Jane Austen to the A-list is one of those books.

Much like a devotion book, A Year in Heels has excerpts for each day of the year. While there’s not a section for EVERY day of the year, there are plenty to last you all year.

Today’s excerpt was about John D. Rockefeller. It was a short excerpt describing who he was and his importance, however it also mentioned how he gave 10% of his millions to the church and yet still paid for his three daughters’ weddings.

The excerpts range from short biographies of historical figures including Jackie Kennedy, Caesar, Marilyn Monroe, Eistein, and many more. From there, some days are random facts of people you have never heard of. Not only is her book full of facts, but delicious recipes, how to host events, what to do for holidays, classical music, Shakespeare’s plays and various summaries from classic novels.

This book should be joining either your night stand or your bookshelf. There is everything a girl should know and possibly want to know. Not is it an interesting read, but you might find yourself learning something new every single day.

Friday Fun Extra: Texts I Hate

Pic Credit: Tumblr

1. K: I am guilty of using this one when I have no free second to reply back to someone or if I’m upset with someone. However, this is still one of my most hated text messages. It’s one thing if you’re busy and are not able to respond with an acceptable response, but to do this all of the time is ridiculous. Is it impossible for you to finish the extra letter to this? It makes me feel as if the person texting does not care enough to finish this word. With phones these days it takes no time to add the extra letter. Thank you.

2. Lol: This one is really annoying to me. If I said something funny, that’s all you can reply with is “lol”? Again, sometimes that’s the response when people are busy and have no time to respond to you. However, this should not be happening all the time. If what I said was remotely entertaining, I want a better response than lol. Most of the time when someone response with “lol” I just stop speaking to them. They can respond when they come up with something more clever or original.

3. Ya: I hate this one because it sends off messages. Do they want me to keep talking or do they not want to talk anymore? What does this even mean? Also, I hate responding to this one because the person who texted it can’t take the extra two seconds, maybe less, to finish the word with adding two letters. I know it’s a big stretch — but yeah looks better than ya.

4. NMU: The whole “text lingo” died once the touch screen phones came out with the full keyboard which makes it easy to text entire sentences in seconds. There’s no more “T9” because the flip phones are not used that often. With that, it annoys me that people cannot spell out entire sentences. It makes them sound lazy. Teenage girls use the “text lingo” still, not adults who have been around this technology for a long time.

5. Send Me A Pic: This is popular amongst boys in particular. They are always asking girls for “pics”. Girls with shirts off, showing more than they should, etc. This is really annoying to be texting a guy and then he pulls that line out. Right then and there it turns me off. Not only is it an inconvenience to take off all of my clothes and then put them back on after I send the picture, but it spoils the entire element of surprise. It also compromises the girl’s dignity. What kind of gentleman would do that to girl?

1. I never know what to do for the 4th of July because I already celebrated the 3rd of July… #biglakeproblems

2. Just because you are in a rush does not mean you are the most important person in the store, restaurant, plane, boat, world, etc. Be patient and wait your turn. Do not crowd people or ask to go ahead of someone. Remember your manners and remember that everyone has somewhere they need to be. #remembermannerspeople

3. Um, I’m not your girlfriend. I can ignore you and refuse to do what you want me to do. Puh-lease.

4.  I do not care how “classy” you think you are, but the second you mention how high you rank in a rodeo is the second I will have nothing to do with you. #ohplease #no

5. If you are a guy in a Friends with Benefit situation, and the girl does not want anything more from your “relationship” be good to her and treat her well. She’s giving you the best situation.

6. Watch 50 Ways to Look Smart on John Green’s Tumblr page. I do at least 25% of those even when I’m not trying to look smart!

7. Just because you read two Chuck Klosterman books does not make you an intellectual. Just stop and read them for what they are. #intellectualwannabes #juststop #dontruinthatbookforme

8. Just because you are wearing cheap clothes does not mean you have to look cheap.

9. I enjoy playing mentally stimulating puzzle games while watching mindless TV.

10. Keep it classy with a C, not with a K. #alwaysclassynevertrashy

Tumblr: How It Works and Why It’s Popular

Pic Credit: Tumblr

Pic Credit: Tumblr

Social media has become part of this generation’s culture. Twitter is the number one source for instant news on everything you could think of. Facebook is the go to site to cure boredom. Pinterest is popular amongst women for countless decorating, fashion, and DIY craft ideas. Tumblr has always been popular, but understated. Understated to where most people don’t understand how it works.

Tumblr is a social media site that is very popular amongst artists, writers, and young people. Mostly popular for reposting photos of various clips from shows, youtube videos, celebrities, fashion, food, and even feelings — it describes those things which others cannot describe themselves.

At first, Tumblr makes no sense. There’s no way to start off — it’s easier to have a person who knows how to work Tumblr to show you how to truly get started. You will start off with no followers, nothing on your dashboard, and wondering how you get to all of the pretty pictures that some of your friends have on theirs. To get started, go to the “search tags” bar and begin to type in various feelings, thoughts, celebrities, tv shows, etc. From there when you find a good blog, you can “follow” that blog — which allows their pictures to show up on your Tumblr dashboard. From there, you are able to “reblog” a picture, putting it onto your own blog. Another easy way to start off gaining followers and finding followers is to go to We Heart It. This website makes it easier to find pictures. You just find the picture you want to share, click tumblr, and delete or add a caption before putting it onto your blog and giving We Heart It the credit.

Not only is Tumblr known for “reblogging” cute pictures onto a start blog for teenage girls, but it’s also a place to connect with people going through similar situations. You can connect with bloggers and ask them questions through their “ask” box. Most bloggers allow anonymous questions to come through to answer. Since Yahoo bought Tumblr, chat has become part of Tumblr now. It allows bloggers from all over the country and all over the world to interact and connect with each other.

While Tumblr has become quite popular amongst the teenage girls. They are able to blog their frustrations and reblog pictures and quotes that describe their feelings when they are unable to describe those feelings themselves. With that, Tumblr is also popular amongst writers and photographers. Tumblr makes it easy for them to get their thoughts out there and allows them to have a strong follower base.

Tumblr is probably the most underrated of the popular social media sites. From that, give it a try and see how it works for you.
